Bradwell - A Derbyshire Village

Bradwell is a typical Derbyshire working village and dates back to pre-roman times. Always a working village, Bradwell has a charm of it's own and is known locally by neighbouring villages as the friendliest village.

In the past various small industries have kept the inhabitants of Bradwell busy over the years. The Bradda Beaver, a felt hat, was supposedly the original design of the First World War tin hat and at least eight hatting shops existed in the early 19th century. Bradwell's most famous son was probably Samuel Fox industrialist, benefactor and inventor of the umbrella frame.

Local amenities include two general grocery shops, a bread and sandwich shop, post office and newsagents and a. fish and chip shop. We have four pubs, three of which provide good food at reasonable prices.

For those who wish to travel a short distance the Hope Valley has plenty of excellent eating places. Bradwell is reasonably well served by bus but the nearest rail station is two miles away at Hope.

Bradwell is located centrally in the Peak District between the Dark Peak and White Peak. Within a twelve mile radius you will find the towns of Buxton and Bakewell and the villages of Tideswell, Eyam, Castleton, Edale and Hathersage. Also in this area are the Chatsworth and Haddon Estates and the magnificent scenery of Ladybower and the Derwent Valley.

well dressing

A delightful feature of this area is the tradition of Wells Dressing.

carnival time

Bradwell dresses four Wells in in the age old style which generally depicts a biblical scene. These very unique crafted structures involve a years work from design to completion, the work is done entirely by local people.

A week long series of events and entertainments coincide around the Wells Dressings and Bradwell's time is the first week in August.
