The Local Area |
|
The White House is centrally located for all the attractions of the Peak Park and has open countryside at the doorstep with many walks and cycling routes close to hand. |
|
Bakewell |
There is a wealth of interesting towns and villages to explore.
Bakewell, is a delightful small
market town (market day on Monday) and the livestock market makes it a regular
meeting place for the farmers of the area. It is of course renowned for the
Bakewell Pudding. |
Tideswell Church |
Tideswell has a church known
as The Cathedral of the Peak on account of its size, fine architecture and fine
wood carvings. Castleton is dominated by the keep
of a Norman castle as well as a fine range of showcaves and gift shops selling jewellery made from
Blue John which is a gemstone unique to the area. |
Ladybower Reservoir |
The Ladybower, Derwent and Howden reservoirs are within a short cyle ride or drive of the White House and offer delightful walks away from traffic, and the peace to marvel at the engineering skills that went into collecting the plentiful water from the peat moorlands of the Dark Peak to supply drinking water to much of the Midlands and to the City of Sheffield. Beyond, the high and remote moors offer remarkable walking country for those who truly want to escape the comforts of civilisation and seek their own solitude. |
High Peak Trail |
The Peak District has facilities for a very wide range of outdoor activities. The High Peak Trail , following the bed of former railway lines, provides a car free route across the limestone uplands of the White Peak and cycle hire is available. Rock climbing is popular on both limestone and gritstone or you may choose to venture underground in the showcaves or, for the experienced, in the numerous potholes, mines and caves. Other activities available include hang-gliding, paragliding, gliding, fishing , golf and swimming. Excellent Tourist Information centres are there to help you make the most of your visit to this lovely area. |
Chatsworth House |
The Peak District boasts impressive stately homes such as
Chatsworth, home of the Duke and
Duchess of Devonshire and set within dramatic grounds and extravagant gardens.
Not to be missed, however, is Haddon
Hall the unspoilt nature of which has made it a popular set for films and
dramas. |
